Growing and Caring for Rose Bushes

Growing and Caring for Rose Bushes

Roses are one of the most popular flowers to grow in home gardens and also to order from local Camden flower shops. Their beautiful blooms come in a wide variety of colors and make wonderful cut flowers. However, roses do require some special care to stay healthy and produce abundant flowers year after year. Here are some tips for growing and caring for rose bushes.

Location

It’s important to choose the right spot in your garden for planting roses. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to bloom well. The soil should be well-drained but rich in organic matter. Loosen the native soil below where you’ll plant and mix in compost or other organic material to improve drainage and nutrition. Face plants north or east to protect roses from the harsh afternoon sun. Provide support for climbing roses by attaching them to fences or arbors.

Planting

Plant bare-root roses in early spring before buds form or begin to swell. Soak the bare roots in water for several hours before planting. Space bush roses 2-3 feet apart and hybrid teas 18-24 inches apart. Dig holes twice as wide as the roots spread and just as deep. Replenish loosened soil around roots and firm gently with your hands. Water thoroughly after planting. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch such as shredded leaves or bark around the base of each plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Watering

Water roses deeply once a week if there is no rainfall, applying 1-2 inches of water. Water at soil level, avoiding wetting foliage which can lead to disease. Adjust watering as needed based on rainfall, temperature, and soil moisture. Container roses will need watering more frequently.

Fertilizing

Feed roses with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer according to label directions every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season from spring to fall. A slow-release fertilizer can also be incorporated into the soil at planting time. Discontinue fertilizing by late summer to harden plants for winter.

Pruning

Prune hybrid teas and grandifloras in early spring before growth begins 6-12 inches above ground level. This encourages new growth. Lightly trim bush roses by one-third of their height. Deadheads bloom to encourage more flowers but leave some seed heads for birds in fall/winter. In winter, cut branches back to strong outward-facing buds near the ground on hybrid teas. Trim other roses for shape and air circulation.

Pests and Diseases

Common rose pests include aphids, Japanese beetles, spider mites, and black spot fungus. Organic remedies used by many Camden florists like neem oil, insecticidal soap, and baking soda sprays can help control minor infestations. For stubborn issues, seek treatment with targeted organic or chemical pesticides according to product instructions. Remove diseased leaves and debris to discourage problems.

Winterizing

As winter approaches, prepare roses for dormancy. Cut stems back to just above a strong outer bud. Mound mulch or compost around the base of plants, piling it 6-8 inches high and forming a 2-3 foot wide mound to insulate roots from extreme cold. This is especially important for mini roses and other shrubs less hardy than hybrid teas. Remove mulch in the very early spring before new growth emerges.

Roses grown in containers will need to be moved to a sheltered, unheated area like a garage or lightly buried in the ground with just the tops exposed. Water minimally through winter only if the soil becomes very dry. Avoid pruning or fertilizing until spring growth resumes. Taking these precautions will give your roses the best chance to stay healthy through winter dormancy and emerge ready to bloom again with warmer weather’s return.

With the right care, roses will reward you with vibrant blooms season after season. Be patient as new plants are established in 1-2 years. Their beauty makes the effort worthwhile!
